Remember that scene from The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly gives a page-long speech on the importance of the fashion industry to Andy Sachs? Well, of course, you do! After all, it was an iconic moment.
For years the fashion industry has set some high standards regarding what can and cannot be worn by people. It has taught many how to be presentable and yet have a unique style. But the same industry has also set some questionable trends which have made people look cringy (to say the least!).
Here’re a few regrettable fashion trends that have made people look awfully funny over the years.
1900s – Corsets
Adieu corsets, for we shan’t see you anymore! That was the line on the lips of every woman by the end of the 19th century. It no surprise females were so happy about not having to wear that super-tight undergarment anymore. After all, who would want to wake up every morning and get into a dress that crushes their bones and internal organs?!
1950s – White Gloves
Imagine yourself at a restaurant or a dinner party wearing a beautiful dress complemented with white gloves. People would either consider you a butler or a medical professional with a forgetful mind! Though the gloves would look bizarre in today’s time, in the 1960s, they were worn with every outfit for no particular reason. Perhaps people at that time weren’t big fans of finger food!
1990s – T-Shirts over Long-Sleeved Shirts
Though Jennifer Aniston flaunted this look on Friends, we fail to understand why anyone would wear a long-sleeve shirt under a T-shirt. Were they too cold? Even if they were, why couldn't they opt for a pullover or a jacket for that matter? Guess they were just too lazy to look through their closets.
2000s – Artful Sunglasses
People in the 2000s took fashion to an all-new level. Most of their accessories were either oversized or undersized. Among them was a weird thing called artful sunglasses! Unlike most sunglasses which protect your eyes from UV rays, these obstructed the vision. If someone is still stuck in that era and perchance they bump into you with these glasses, please pardon them. They’re partially blind you know!
2010s – Micro Mini Bags
All these years we were told that a bag must be able to carry necessary stuff. But in 2010, people changed the whole idea about their existence by launching micro mini bags. These bags couldn't carry anything; they were just for show. However, there was one thing common among them and the regular bags: people had to take care of both.
Wrapping it up
We hope that you can see the thin line between being trendy and being weird by now. It might be a good idea to remember that just because something is doing rounds on Instagram, you don't have to try it yourself. At least if you don't want people to burst into laughter at seeing you!
