A Retrospective Of The Brown Sisters Through The Years

The age-old saying that a picture speaks more than words couldn’t be more accurate than when examining these 40 pictures taken by Nicholas Nixon. When Nixon embarked on this creative photographic journey, four sisters served as his muse. His mission was simple; he set out to capture them all in one photo every year.

Four decades later, the result is this collection of stunning black and white snapshots. The photos speak volumes, even if you don’t know the backstory behind the images or details about the four women. The beauty of this collection is the fact that it allows the viewer to fill in the blanks. See for yourself…

Taking It Back To 1975

The project was quite personal for Nixon because one of the subjects happened to be his wife, Bebe. The other three ladies were his sisters-in-law, and he couldn’t have asked for a better subject who demonstrated the fabric of what it means to have each other’s back. 1974 was the year he took the first photo of the four sisters.

However, he ended up discarding the negative, but the idea lingered in his mind. Laurie graduated in 1975, and since they were all gathered for the special occasion, he snapped this photo. It ended up being the first of many pictures of Heather, Mimi, Bebe, and Laurie (from the left).
