Pauley Perrette was born in New Orleans but moved to New York, where she did odd jobs as a cook, bartender, and passing out flyers before being introduced to an advertising agency director. She later went to Los Angeles, where she started appearing in commercials, short films, music videos and even did voiceovers.

On October 14, 1979, she married George Gradow, who is a real estate developer. The duo had their first child in 1986 and named him Alexander, after which Benton quit the glamour industry to look after her family. On July 13, 1988, the duo had their second child Ariana and own two homes, one in Aspen and the other in Los Angeles.
