PONIES ON THE BEACH
Similar to Pig Beach, there exists an island getaway nestled between Maryland and Virginia that serves as a haven for ponies. Assateague Island, located near the Delmarva Peninsula, is home to a population of wild horses. This 37-mile-long barrier island, facing the Atlantic Ocean, features the Assateague State Park within its Maryland section. The equines residing on the island have adapted to their environment, resulting in a relatively smaller size compared to their mainland counterparts. These two ponies perfectly showcase the island’s charm, with one seeking shade under a beach umbrella while the other enjoys a peaceful snooze. Assateague Island is not only renowned for its wild horses but also hosts a diverse array of wildlife, including 320 other species such as shorebirds, waterbirds, and raptors.
